Perhaps lost in the fact that Centerburg is 10-9 on the year and 6-6 in KMAC play, and that it lost a pair of volleyball matches last week, has been strong play by several of its players.
The competition week began Oct. 7. In a match in which Centerburg’s Trojans saw a 2-set lead fall to the Fredericktown Freddies, both teams saw titanic games from their players.
The Freddies reeled off the final three sets in a row behind huge numbers from senior Lindsey Boeshart with 21 kills, 5 aces and 32 digs, senior Lainie Partington with 29 digs and junior Grace Sipes with 22 digs.
For Centerburg, Stella Weisbrod led the match with 22 kills, and Gwyn Sands had 15 kills and 4 aces and 12 blocks. Kylie Schaeferle had 19 digs, and Kennedi Glenn had 17 digs and 7 kills
Centerburg was beaten by Cardington-Lincoln 3-0 on Oct. 9, losing the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-22 before letting the third set slip.
Cardington-Lincoln attacked with junior Audrey Brininger’s 15 kills, 5 aces and 9 digs and junior Payton Goodman’s 13 kills. Senior Kayleigh Ufferman had 7 digs.
For the Trojans, sophomores Weisbrod with 5 kills and 8 digs and Glenn with 5 kills and 9 digs led the way in defeat, while junior Sands had 4 kills and senior Schaeferle had 11 digs.
Utica volleyball splits pair of shutouts
The Utica Redskins volleyball team fell to 7-13 and 4-10 in Licking County League play, splitting a pair of 3-0 decisions.
On Oct. 12, the Redskin girls fought the third set not wanting to end it, but lost to Johnstown-Monroe 3-0, with thied final set going 26-24 for the Johnnies.
Utica finished the match with 14 kills, 11 aes, 2 blocks and 36 digs and were led by Emilee Ellis with 5 aces,10 assists and 6 digs; Carlie Parsons with 4 aces and 6 digs; Lily Borem with 6 kills and 2 blocks; and Bella Ellis with 3 kills, 3 assists and 7 digs.
That loss was avenged the following day, Oct. 13, when the Redskins downed Lakewood 3-0 with set wins of 25-15, 25-11, 25,16. The team ended with 22 kills, 13 aces, 3 blocks and 24 digs, and were led by Bella Ellis with 5 aces, 5 kills, 1 block and 7 assists; Emilee Ellis with 4 aces and 13 assists; Lily Borem with 6 kills, 2 blocks and 5 digs; Georgia Gamble with 4 kills and 7 digs; and Hannah Shaver with 3 kills
