MOUNT VERNON – Janet D. Conger, 86, entered her eternal rest in the early morning of Sept. 26, 2021, at the Mount Vernon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Janet was born on Dec. 29, 1934, in Mount Vernon to Lloyd and Mae (Robbins) Conger.
Janet graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1952, attended Lipscomb College for a short while and then took a job with Cooper Bessemer. During this time, she enjoyed singing with the Sweet Adelines. She then moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and it was there that she launched her business, Great Performances Catering. Her business perfectly expressed her passion for entertaining and afforded her opportunity to give of her special gift of hospitality. She was quite proud to cater for the PGA. After returning to Mount Vernon from Florida, Janet continued with her catering business and locally served the Old Homestead Club and catered for other local functions. She also worked for People’s Bank of Gambier, Snyder Funeral Homes and the Knox County Historical Museum. Janet had no children of her own but mothered all the children she was surrounded by and always looked forward to the arrival of a new baby. She was a member of the Mount Vernon Church of Christ, where Janet shared her talents to add a special touch to many ladies’ luncheons and church gatherings. Janet loved to watch sports and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. She found great company in the many cats she had as pets over the years, most recently Little Boy and Ellen. Janet loved to have visitors in her home, and the longer they stayed, the better.
Besides her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her brothers, Carroll and Dean Conger. Surviving are sister-in-law Mary Lou (Teeter) Conger and her nieces, Lee Ann (Andrew) Squire of Schaghticoke, New York, and Lori Lynn Conger of Lewis Center, Ohio.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Pastor Ben Driver officiating. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is handling the services for the Conger family.
Memorial contributions in Janet’s memory can be made to InCare Home Health and Hospice of Medina and Homeless to Home Animal Rescue & Cat Sanctuary in Marion. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Mount Vernon Health and Rehabilitation for being Janet’s family during the isolating days of COVID, and to the InCare Hospice staff for their sensitivity as her body grew tired. They are also grateful for the friendship and care that the Tumbleson family surrounded her with, especially in the past few years.
