MOUNT VERNON – Ida Virginia Duston of Mount Vernon peacefully passed away on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, at the Country Club Retirement Center in Mount Vernon. She had proudly celebrated her 100th birthday at home on Sept. 16, 2021. Virginia was born in Mansfield to Harry R and Mamie G. Elwood and had spent most of her life in Mount Vernon.

She had been employed at the Cooper Bessemer Company in Mount Vernon for several years. She was an active member of the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church and also attended the Victory Church of Christ in Mount Vernon. Virginia was an animal lover delighting in the companionship with her “Ms. Kitty.” She also loved flowers and had participated in bowling leagues in the Mount Vernon area for a number of years. She always enjoyed decorating the outside of her house for all the holidays and was very patriotic.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and was especially fond of her primary caregivers, Philip Earlywine and the entire Earlywine family.  She also loved and appreciated the Melba Phillips family, her beautician Barbara VanHouten, her Mulberry Street United Methodist Church family, and other friends and relatives that looked in on her over the years.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Duston, in 2004.

A very special thanks to the Mount Vernon Fire Department EMS, Knox Community Hospital, Ohio Eastern Star Home, Country Club Retirement Center and Kindred Hospice who each provided some type of care for her during the last week of her life.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 6, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Ernst officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour before the funeral. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society or the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church or  Kindred Hospice.
