MOUNT VERNON – Ray Stover, 76, of Mount Vernon passed away on Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at The Laurels of Mount Vernon.
Ray was born on Aug. 12, 1945, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. He was a passionate drag racer, setting many national records and winning numerous NHRA and IHRA events during his 34 years of racing. After retiring from racing, he stayed involved with the sport, going on to work with the NHRA for eight years. Golf was another beloved pastime of Ray’s – he loved to play and be out at the course. His local favorite was Chapel Hill, where he was a member for many years. A man of great faith, he was a dutiful servant and volunteer at the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Ray loved to help where he could, being a willing and active volunteer for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Cancer Action Network and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy (Ewers) Stover; a son, James (Melanie) Stover of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Isaac and Beatrice.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Beulah Stover; and son, Scott Stover, in 2010.
Graveside memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. in Mound View Cemetery with Rev. Scott Elliott officiating. The Snyder Funeral Home – Lasater Chapel is handling the arrangements for the Stover family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
