MOUNT VERNON – Joan J. Mertz, 87, of Mount Vernon passed away on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, at Sage Park Assisted Living in Gahanna. She was born on July 8, 1934, in Attica, to the late Wilbur and Enola (Bunn) Kelley.   

Joan was a nurse and worked for Memorial Hospital, Kenyon College and Country Court Care Center.  She was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church and card clubs. Joan enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and traveling. Most of all, she loved being around her loving family.    

Joan is survived by her children, Amy (Phil) Brugger, Steven (Chrystal) Mertz and Joy (Jeffrey) Kalata; seven grandchildren; Rachael (Brent), Zachary, Stephanie, Caitlyn (Jordan), Chelsea (Drew), Hayley and Mikaela; six great-grandchildren, Jake, Hayden, Evie, Anna, Landyn and Truitt (and one to come in December); a brother, James Kelley; sisters, Maralyn Bobenmoyer and Karen Munch; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Along with her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Earle Mertz; a brother, Howard Kelley; and a sister, Joyce Davis. 

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m.-noon with a funeral service starting at noon at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050, with Karen Oehl officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
