TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released on Wednesday the names of individual and team academic and regional awards. Among those lists, members of the Kenyon College 2020-21 women's team appeared prominently.
In Central Region awards, Erika Oku was named the Senior Player of the Year, Kayla Pukys was named the Most Improved Senior, Ilana Blackwood earned the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award, and Scott Thielke was voted the Wilson ITA Coach of the Year.
In the academic awards listings, the Ladies collected the All-Academic Team honor for the 13th consecutive time and 18th time since the 1998-99 season. In order to earn the award, all members of a team had to post a collective grade point average of 3.2 or better. The Ladies, who had a dozen student-athletes on their 2020-21 roster, combined for a 3.47 grade point average.
On an individual basis, seven Ladies earned the ITA’s Scholar-Athlete award, given to those student-athletes who recorded at least a 3.5 grade point average for the duration of the academic year. Those Ladies making the grade included Oku, Pukys, Blackwood, Sofia Alonso, Catriona MacIntosh, Elena Prenovitz, Erika Pontillo and Anna Winslow.
Oku, a four-time winner of the ITA Scholar-Athlete award, graduated as one of the most decorated players in Kenyon history. In addition to her most recent ITA Central Region Senior Player of the Year, Oku’s hardware collection includes six ITA All-America certificates, the four ITA Scholar-Athlete awards, ITA Central Region and NCAA Division III Player to Watch awards, as well as three All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors, including two Player of the Year awards and one Newcomer of the Year award. Despite missing portions of her junior and senior seasons, Oku posted a 67-15 career singles record and a 71-26 career doubles record.
Pukys scored her Central Region Most Improved Senior honor with an impressive 7-1 record in singles play. As a sophomore, she played at No. 5 in the Kenyon lineup. During her pandemic-shortened junior year, she moved to the No. 4 spot and, as a senior, she kept the momentum going with a near-perfect singles record, supported by a 7-4 doubles record.
Blackwood also produced positive marks on the court, particularly in doubles play. Her ITA award, however, was presented to her based on non-measurables. Her Arthur Ashe award was earned, as the award description reads, based on outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
As their coach, Thielke guided the 2020-21 Ladies to an 11-1 record, an NCAC Championship and a run through the NCAA Division III Tournament that lasted all the way to the semifinal round. His ITA Central Region Coach of the Year award is a first for him with the Ladies. Previously, Thielke won the award twice in his work with the Lords program. Additionally, he’s an eight-time winner of the NCAC Coach of the Year for men and a ten-time winner for women. After announcing his retirement in May, his final coaching record with the Ladies stands at 398-180.
Platas highlights Lords’ ITA award winners
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Wednesday that the Kenyon College men's team won both team and individual academic honors for the 2020-21 campaign. Then, in a follow-up release, the ITA disclosed that Luis Andres Platas was named the Central Region Rookie of the Year.
Platas’ regional award comes on the heels of an All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) award, as well as the NCAC’s Newcomer of the Year honor. He earned the accolades by taking over Kenyon’s No. 1 lineup spot in 2020-21 and registering a 5-1 record in singles play and a 5-2 record in doubles play.
The All-Academic Team honor was Kenyon’s fifth straight and 14th overall. To be eligible, a team had to have all its members combine for a 3.2 grade point average or better. Kenyon, which had a roster of eight during the 2020-21 season, produced a team grade point average of 3.36.
On an individual basis, two Lords were tabbed ITA Scholar-Athletes. That honor is bestowed upon those student-athletes who recorded at least a 3.5 grade point average for the duration of the academic year. The Lords who reached, or exceeded, that benchmark were juniors Angelo Vidal and Jack Wagner.
During the 2020-21 season ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lords used their limited roster and limited schedule to produce an overall record of 3-4, which included an NCAC record of 2-3.
