MOUNT VERNON – Lois D. Thornton, 86, of Mount Vernon passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at her residence. She was born on July 24, 1934, in Shelby to the late Raymond and Mary (Ervin) Phelps.
Lois graduated from Union High School and married the love of her life, Emory Thornton. They loved and supported each other for over 65 years and enjoyed their home together in Galion for 50 years. She was a stay-at-home mom and raised her children before joining the work force. Lois was a secretary and treasurer for Northmor and Galion high schools. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Galion, where she was able to serve and live out her faith in a personal relationship with Jesus. Her faith was so important that she loved sharing and working with the children at church, including directing the Caravan Ministry, plus going on a Work ‘N’ Witness trip. Lois enjoyed crafts, cooking, camping and sailing. She will be greatly missed by those who loved her, but her life and legacy of walking faithfully with Jesus will live through her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Emory Thornton; children, Scott (Cathy) Thornton of Mesa, Arizona, Bev (Dan) Stevens of Mount Vernon, Ohio; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, Lois is preceded in death by a brother, Richard Phelps.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, July 25, at 3 p.m. at the Real Life Nazarene Church, 777 Fairview Ave., Galion, OH 44833, with Pastor Mike Williams officiating.
