COLUMBUS – The Central Ohio Diabetes Association, an agency provided by LifeCare Alliance, welcomes young campers back after the COVID-19 pandemic to “Live Free” with Type 1 diabetes at Camp Hamwi.

Camp Hamwi, located at Camp Mohaven in Danville at 18744 Turkey Ridge Road, is a residential camp and offers a diverse program for any skill level for youths ages 7–17 with diabetes.

Last year, Type 1 campers participated in virtual camps because of the COVID-19 protocols of 2020. But this year, campers will experience in-person camp with all the traditional camp activities and adventures while learning to improve their diabetes management. Diabetes education topics include nutrition and carbohydrate counting, insulin therapy and blood glucose monitoring.

Camp Hamwi offers an exceptional summer camp experience for youths who have diabetes. Camp includes:

-The Senior Challenge (ages 13–17) begins July 18–24 and July 25–31. The Senior Challenge offers a more advanced program for the oldest campers. The Seniors are exposed to rappelling, canoeing, overnight camping, initiative games and much more. Senior campers can invite a friend to attend Hamwi with them.

- The Junior Challenge (ages 7–12) begins Aug. 1–7. Activities are geared to entertain and encourage the youngest resident campers. Outdoor games, water games, a talent show and a treasure hunt are a few of the activities that fill this program with wholesome fun.

For more than 50 years, Camp Hamwi has been dedicated to meeting the needs of children with diabetes, and campers love to share their experiences with life-long friends they met at camp. For more information, call 614-884-4400 or email amyer@lifecarealliance.org.
