CENTERBURG – Norman G. Altizer, beloved husband, father and Pappaw, passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2021, at the age of 83. Born on May 13, 1937, in Richlands, Virginia, to Louie Sr. and Carrie (Beavers) Altizer, Norm moved with his family to Ohio in 1947.

Norm was an avid golfer, golf club collector and member of the golf collector’s society. He was a harness-racing enthusiast, enjoyed hunting with his family and loved spending quality time at the Altizer family farm, which he ultimately moved back to. He was a self-employed drywall finisher and worked as a union plasterer with several friends from the Morrow County area, but he was perhaps best known for his love for his family and his ability to tell a great story.

Norm was a master of his craft, able to turn a dull ceiling into a work of art with his skill. He was also a self-made engineer, using his ingenuity with duct tape, copper wire, buckets, boards, scaffolding and stilts to get jobs done onsite or at home. Norm was a past member of the Centerburg Conservation Club and a former little league coach. He attended the Advent Christian Church and Centerburg United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ella “Susie” Clark; and was the proud father of Gwen (Larry) Ludlow, Britt (Bronwyn) Altizer and Nathan Altizer; grandpa of Kyler (Aubrey) Ludlow, Kenleigh Ludlow, and Lily and Drew Altizer; and great-grandpa of Keegan and Mara Ludlow. He also loved his canine companions, Caddy, Winnie, Rosie, Lucy and Heisy. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Warren (Peg) Altizer; sisters, Mary (Jim) Stiffler and Betty (Jim) Mossholder; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louie Jr., John (Jay), Rex and Dewey; and sister, Lucille Kauffman.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 N. State Route 61 (at State Route 3) in Sunbury. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Centerburg United Methodist Church, 65 S. Hartford Road in Centerburg, with Pastors Roger Crego and Matt Skelton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Highland Community Park, c/o Highland Local Schools, 6506 State Route 229, Marengo, OH 43334.
