Did you know?
President Biden has recently said China is committing “genocide” against its own citizens in the region of Xinjiang, where hundreds of thousands of people have been sent to Chinese “re-education” camps, according to the United Nations. But, there is a hypocritical twist to Biden’s outrage.
Besides human rights abuses, Xinjiang is also known for supplying polysilicon, a key rare earth metal necessary to build solar panels. In fact, China supplies 80 percent of the world’s polysilicon and Xinjiang, alone, produces half the world’s supply. The AFL-CIO even asked Biden to block the import of solar products containing polysilicon from Xinjiang because the metal may have been produced through forced labor.
Biden has called for 100 percent “clean” energy by 2035 and “net-zero” emissions by 2050. A recent study by Rystad Energy estimated that Biden’s goal would require 13,412 square miles of solar panels to hit that mark. Beyond all the other problems that would come with blanketing an area the size of the state of Maryland with solar panels, this goal will be impossible to reach without sourcing minerals like polysilicon from China and other corrupt, oppressive governments.
The United States has an abundant supply of clean, domestic energy, like natural gas, that can power our nation for the next century or longer. We cannot let the Biden administration compromise our values by excusing atrocities in places like China, in exchange for “green” pipe dreams and pandering.
We’d like to know. Do you oppose so-called “green” energy imported from oppressive nations like China?
