FREDERICKTOWN – John L. Hayes, 81, of Fredericktown, passed away at Knox Community Hospital on Feb. 22, 2021. He was born to Gerald C. and Reva T. (White) Hayes on Nov. 30, 1939, in Mount Vernon.
John was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1958 to 1962. He was a member of the gold prospectors of America. John was a longtime member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He spent most of his career as a barber and was known by many as “John the Barber of Butler.” He lived in Fredericktown for the past 20 years and could often be seen on his scooter with his dog riding around town.
There was nothing John enjoyed more than visiting with his many friends and family. He never met a stranger. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and scooters, traveling, reading about history, rock collecting and working with his hands on many projects including mechanical, metalworking, woodworking and hand-carving.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Boone) Hayes; sons, Stephen (Nancy) Hayes of El Paso, Texas, Gerald Hayes (Jessica) of Logan, Utah, and John Mark Hayes of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, April, Nikkita, Cody, Stephen Jr., Kyra and Sarah; and great-granddaughter, Bristol.
John was preceded in death by his parents and extended family.
Calling hours will be at the Lasater Funeral Home from 3-6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, with a funeral service at 6 p.m. An ash-scattering service will be held at a later date.
