Roundup: Jackets to host Westland in boys basketball tourney

The Mount Vernon boys basketball team will host a tournament game after the Central District held its tournament draw virtually on Sunday, Feb. 7.

The 38th-seeded Yellow Jackets will host 44th-seeded Westland at The Hive on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The winner will travel to second-seeded Westerville Central in the second round on Feb. 26, which will also tip off at 7 p.m.

All games in the district tournament, including the semifinal and final rounds, will take place at the better seed’s site, though switches have been made if the better seed isn’t allowing fans.

Here’s where the rest of the area teams ended up:

Division II

Highland is seeded 19th in Division II and will travel to eighth-seeded Bishop Hartley on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The winner will travel to sixth-seeded Bloom-Carroll in the second round on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.

Division III

Fredericktown is seeded sixth, Centerburg is the eight-seed, Mount Gilead is seeded 15th, Utica is seeded 19th and Northmor is seeded 21st in Division III.

The Freddies will host 13th-seeded Madison-Plains in the second round on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. and will face either second-seeded Harvest Prep, Utica or 23rd-seeded KIPP Columbus in a district semifinal on March 2 at 7 p.m.

Utica has a first-round bye and will play the Harvest Prep-KIPP Columbus winner on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

The Trojans host 22nd-seeded Columbus North International in the first round on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. The winner will travel to Richwood to take on fourth-seeded North Union in Round 2 on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

Mount Gilead and Northmor both have first-round byes.

MG will face the winner of third-seeded Johnstown and 16th-seeded Marion Pleasant on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

Northmor travels to play the winner of top-seeded Worthington Christian and 20th-seeded West Jefferson on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

Division IV

Cardington-Lincoln is the top-seed and there will be a Devil-Dog rematch in Division IV.

With only two first-round games in the Division IV bracket, fifth-seeded East Knox will host 17th-seeded Danville in the second round on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.

The winner will play the winner of third-seeded Newark Catholic and eighth-seeded Fisher Catholic on March 2 at 7 p.m.

The Pirates also have a first-round bye and will host the winner of 11th-seeded Delaware Christian and 14th-seeded Ridgedale in the second round on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

BOWLING

Katrina Wells and Trevor Bell both earned All-Ohio Cardinal Conference first-team honors at the league’s tournament on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Lex Lanes in Lexington.

Wells rolled a three-game series of 516 to finish fifth in the girls tournament behind Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker (728), who won Bowler of the Year.

Bell rolled a three-game series of 649 in the boys tournament behind Ashland’s Avery Brown (748), who was Bowler of the Year.

The Yellow Jackets were third with 3,099 and the boys were fourth with 3,868 in the five-team event, which was won by the Arrows, who swept with a 4,066 by the girls team and a 4,495 by the boys team.

Jace Kyle (501) and Chelsea King (471) were second team and Izzy Moore (444) was third team for Mount Vernon.

WRESTLING

Gabe Harmon tallied his 100th career win as Mount Vernon swept a quad at Energy Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 6.

Harmon, who wrestles in the 220-pound weight division, was one of eight wrestlers to go undefeated on the day as the Yellow Jackets defeated Westerville Central, Thomas Worthington and Delaware Hayes.

Dylan Hartman (106 pounds), Brock Blankenhorn (113), Colton Spurgeon (120), Rylan Firebaugh (126), Gabe Shannon (138), Jesse Foster (195) and Nate Stradley (285) were also perfect on the day.
