Roundup: Jackets split at Ontario and Newark

The Mount Vernon wrestling team split four matches over two days this week. The Jackets split at a Newark tri on Thursday, Jan. 28, defeating Groveport Madison 45-33 while falling to the host Wildcats 43-34.

The split came one day after Mount Vernon split in a tri at Ontario, defeating host Ontario 39-33 but falling to Clear Fork 45-27.

Colton Spurgeon (120 pounds), Rylan Firebaugh (126) and Nate Stradley (285) went a perfect 4-0 over the two days of action. Spurgeon, a junior, notched his 99th victory at Newark.

Jesse Foster (195) won both of his matches at Newark for the Jackets; and Brock Blankenhorn (106 pounds), Gabe Shannon (138) and Gabe Harmon (220) took both of their matches at Ontario.

BOWLING

Wesley Hammond rolled a school-record 269, leading the Northmor boys bowling team to a 2,188-1,723 win over Mount Gilead in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Monday, Jan. 25, at Victory Lanes in Galion. Hammond finished with a 461 series. 

Cole Postell rolled a 423 series and — with the help of Hammond (410) and Joe Baldinger (408) — led the Golden Knights to a 2,142-1,761 victory over Centerburg in KMAC action on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Victory Lanes.

Graham Sherbourne (337) led MG and John Wharton (402) paced Centerburg.

The Northmor girls bowling team also picked up a pair of wins, besting Mount Gilead (2,063-1,497) and Centerburg (2,005-1,382).

Maddie Hoverland rolled a 395 series to lead the Knights over Centerburg and a 391 to lead the Knights against MG.

Mikayla Meyer led MG with a 296 series, and Madi Dennis rolled a 281 series to lead the Trojans.

Utica swept by Sheridan

Blake French (382 series) led the boys bowling team, and Karen Lightle (363) and Jordan Lacy (361) paced the girls team, but Utica was swept by Sheridan in non-league play on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Village Lanes in Thornville.

The host Generals won 2,070-1,740 in boys play and 1,795-1,611 in girls action.

Jacket girls team bests Generals, Tygers; boys fall

Jace Kyle rolled a 376 series to lead the Mount Vernon girls team to a 2,366-2,130 win over Wooster in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Wayne Lanes in Wooster.

The Jackets also earned an OCC victory over Mansfield Senior on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Lex Lanes in Lexington. Izzy Moore’s 338 paced the Yellow Jackets in the 1,953-1,421 win against the Tygers.

Trevor Bell rolled a pair of 200 games and finished with a 439 series, but the Mount Vernon boys team fell to the Generals 2,829-2,624.

The Jackets lost by a narrow margin at Mansfield Senior as well, falling 2,444-2,345. David Balling rolled a 405 series and Trevor Bell was close behind with a 398 series on the strength of a 243 game to pace the Jackets.
