This week's Pet of the Week winner is Maela. She is owned by Gwen and John Hollback, residents of Apple Valley for 16 years.
The name Maela means "Princess." It could not be more fitting. This little love bug is a 9-pound Havanese and will be turning 9 years old on Dec. 16.
Maela was originally purchased from a breeder by their son for their grandchildren; but shortly after they got her, they decided a yard without a fence posed too much of a danger. She was always knocking down the Hollbacks' 1-year-old grandchild and became a bit overzealous with chewing up pacifiers. Mr. and Mrs. Hollback decided to take Maela to their home thinking it would be temporary, but very quickly fell in love with her and could not give her back, so they decided to adopt her from their son's family.
In March, Maela got very sick. Not knowing much yet — like everyone else — the Hollbacks thought, "Could she have COVID?" Turns out it was a serious case of pneumonia. After spending some time at Med vet, she pulled through and has been a happy, healthy little princess ever since.
Maela loves riding in the front of the Hollbacks' pontoon boat and on the ATV. She also loves to shred paper or Kleenex.
"Don't leave your purse on the floor or she will take out tissues, receipts and even money and shred it," Mrs. Hollback says. She will also remove the napkins from your lap at the dinner table if you're not watching her.
The Hollbacks state that she is "like our little watch dog." She barks at anyone and everyone who comes to the door; but as soon as you come inside she will lick you to death at the same time she bosses her cousins around, a large German shepherd and a collie. Princess Maela runs the house.
She is also trained to do all sorts of tricks. She hops across the room on her hind legs, dances and even knows how to play dead, among others.
Mrs. Hollback recently had knee surgery and says Maela has been the perfect little nursemaid.
"She lays right by my side and gently places her head on my knee," she said.
Maela gets her routine spa day every seven- to eight weeks, consisting of a bubble bath and blow dry; along with a nail filing, gland expression, and ear and teeth cleaning with David at Professional Pet Grooming.
