CENTERBURG – Darlyene M. Hankins, 88, of Centerburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, at Knox Community Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Columbus on Oct. 5, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Earl R. and Maude (Schaffer) Powell.
On Dec. 18, 1949, Darlyene married John Roland Hankins, her sweetheart who lived just up the road in Bloomfield. They were married for 62 years before John’s passing in 2012.
Darlyene worked for Canterbury Villa of Centerburg for many years and was a lifelong homemaker. She had a passion for any kind of animal and had many pets over the years. She loved to look through magazines filled with dogs, cats and colorful birds. Darlyene’s most precious time was spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. A devoted woman of God, Darlyene was a member of Fargo Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by sons, John Robert (Retta) Hankins of Marengo and Christopher Allen Hankins of Centerburg; grandchildren, Jonathan Todd Hankins of Centerburg, Chad Alan (Amber) Hankins of Centerburg, and Kanaan Hankins and family of Dublin; great-grandchildren, Taylor (Gabe) Randall of Fulton, and Garison Alan and Gavin John Hankins of Centerburg; brother, Don Powell of Centerburg; nieces, Kris (Dave) Compton of Apple Valley and Angie (Ron) Miller of Mount Liberty; nephew, David (Reggie) Powell of Delaware; a sister-in-law, Sarah Hankins; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Darleyne was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Earl “Bob” Powell; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Powell and Nita Powell.
A special thanks to her loving niece Kris Compton who stayed by her side, comforting her through Scripture reading and playing hymns.
Graveside services will be observed privately by her family in Bloomfield Cemetery near Sparta, where she will be buried next to her beloved husband. Arrangements have been entrusted to the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury.
