Roundup: Scot wrestlers shine at home temporary tournament

Wtih no annual Jeremy Ammons Kilted Klassic because of coronavirus restrictions, the Highland wrestling team hosted the COVID-19 Invitational instead. 

The Scots walked away with a first-place finish in the six-team mini-tournament held on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Sparta.

Highland (125.5 points) beat out London (119.0), Elmore Woodmore (106.5), Newark Catholic (92.0), Mount Gilead (63.0) and Greenfield McClain (61.0) to win the hopefully one-off tournament.

Caleb Wetzel (126 pounds), Kaden Miller (138), Cody Matthews (160) and Triston Hinkle (220) all took home first-place finishes for the Scots; and Damien Daniel (152) came in second in his weight class.

Andy Williamson highlighted Mount Gilead’s day with top honors in the 182-pound weight class.

Clear Fork Invitational

Fredericktown’s Mason Hoeflich and Lucas Herbst both placed at the Clear Fork Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Bellville.

Hoeflich (170) and Herbst (285) both earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes to help the Freddies finish with 41.5 points, good for 12th in the 12-team tournament.

The host Colts (110.5 points) ended up seventh behind tournament-winner Apple Creek Waynedale (326.0).

Colton Campbell (126 pounds) took home top honors and Travis Bowman (182) placed second, in their respective weight classes, to lead Clear Fork.

Isaiah Thomas (132) and Brady Au (145) were both fourth in their weight classes, and Cody Jackson placed fifth for the Colts.

Haedyn Parman (113) and Michael Fister (126) each finished second, Chad Bailey (160) was third and Anden Dowdy (152) was sixth to help Northridge to a ninth-place finish.

Doan Ford Invitational

Austin Smith’s third-place finish in the 152-pound weight class highlighted Utica’s day at the Doan Ford Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 12, in Barnesville.

Brock Wygle (126) finished fourth, and Wesley Wydick (113) and Dylan Cooperider (285) each came in sixth to lead Utica to a 13th-place finish with 49.0 points in the 17-team field.

Host Barnesville and Louisville tied with 180.0 points.

Swimming

Mount Vernon had 16 swimmers set new personal records in a first-place finish at the River Valley swim meet at the W. Keith Davis Natatorium at the Marion YMCA on Saturday, Dec. 12.

The Yellow Jackets (126 points) beat out host River Valley (109), Marion Harding (89) and Marion Elgin (23) in the four-team meet.

The girls team finished first with 89 points and the boys team was third with 37 points behind Marion Harding (55) and the host Vikings (54).

Skylar Hill and Rylee Jarosz both had solid efforts for the MV girls team. Hill was tops in the 200-yard individual medley (2:36.89) and 100-yard butterfly (1:07.82).

Jarosz (6:38.79) was first in the 500-yard freestyle and beat the field in the 100-yard breast stroke.

The duo were also part of the 200-yard freestyle team — along with Liz Cline and Bre McClusky — that finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:57.40) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:28.63).

Cline (2:23.98) and Anna Rhodeback (2:38.38) finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. McCluskey (1:02.13), Bekah Lebold (1:12.00) and Jordan Schisler (1:14.93) were the top three of the 100-yard freestyle.

The boys team got a first-place finish from Joey Kennedy (1:20.85) in the 100-yard backstroke.

Boys bowling

Chase Keyes rolled a game-high 195 and a series-high 335 to lead Fredericktown to a 1,779-1,679 victory on Friday, Dec. 11, at Bucyrus Suburban Lanes.

Billy Woodring was also solid for the Freddies, rolling a 316 series; and Justin Zollars added a 290 series.

Hyden Rittenberry led Bucyrus with a 291 series.

Cardington-Lincoln 2,007, East Knox 1,330

Mike Blake and Silas Horton led Cardington to a 2,007-1,330 victory over East Knox in KMAC play on Friday, Dec. 11 at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Blake rolled a game-high 207 and a series-high 344, and Horton was close behind with a 339 series to lead the Pirates.

Will Jenson rolled a 201 game and 381 series, and Dylan Reed wasn’t far behind with a 348 series for the host Bulldogs.

Girls bowling

Macy Neer’s series-high 309 led Fredericktown to a 1,582-1,453 win over host Bucyrus in non-league action on Friday, Dec. 11, at Bucyrus Suburban Lanes.

Neer’s 172 in the opener was a game-best.

McKenna Andrew (262 series) and Grace McMahon (250) backed Neer for the Freddies.

Emily Ditmars rolled a 282 series, Maddison McDaniel had a 276 series and Kailey Horsley followed with a 269 series to lead Bucyrus.

Cardington 1,568, East Knox 557

Peyton Goodman rolled a series-high 325 to lead the Pirates over host East Knox 1,568-557 in KMAC play on Friday, Dec. 11 at Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon.

Chloe Ketron rolled a 174 series to lead the three-player Bulldogs in the setback.
