MOUNT VERNON – Michelle Carpenter moved to Mount Vernon in 1999 to start a dental practice but also to become a part of the community.

“We were looking for a place to raise a family,” she said. “We didn’t want to be in the big city. My husband and I had both grown up in small towns and we wanted to raise our children in a small town. It’s been terrific.”

In Mount Vernon, Carpenter has developed close relationships with her patients in a way that probably would not have been possible in a larger city.

“They’re like our family,” she told the Mount Vernon News. “We know what’s going on in their lives, not just dentally but just what’s happening with them. People come in and I can ask about their grandchildren. I can ask about how school is going. We’re invested in their lives and in the community.”

Her practice has a small-town feel, but in terms of technology and quality of care, it rivals any more urban practice, she said.

“In small-town practices, people think that the level of care drops,” she said. “But in our practice, we are up to date on all the latest technology.”
