MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Vernon Avenue bridge will be closed from Wednesday to Monday, Oct. 26 for repair work.
A concrete pour for the bridge will require the time for the concrete to set, Rick Dzik, safety services director told the Mount Vernon News.
Public utilities and leaves
Utility crews hope to have storm sewer repair on Eastwood Drive between Coshocton Avenue and Teryl Drive completed by Oct. 21.
Leaf pickup begins Nov. 2.
“They are going to be pretty much constantly going around the city picking up leaves,” Dzik said.
Residents can visit the city’s website the week of Oct. 26 to find out the leaf pickup schedule for their street. They will need to rake all their leaves to the curb, but not into the street.
“Raking leaves into the street will clog up our storm sewers and create some problems,” he said.
New drains are being installed in the parking garage next to City Hall. The garage will close on Oct. 24 so that it can be swept and pressure washed.
No late fees
A problem with the delivery of water bills that Mayor Matt Starr said were mailed out by city staff on Oct. 1 prompted the city to suspend late fees for October.
“We're still digging into any of the reasons why the delay,” Starr told the News. “In the meantime, we're also looking at our own billing process and coming up with ways we can at least gain maybe a couple more days to get that bill out sooner.”
More leaks discovered
A 'boil water' advisory ended after a leak at West Gambier in front of Trail City was repaired, Mathias Orndorf, director of public utilities, said. The cast-iron pipe was installed in 1965 and had been leaking for a while. Crews found an 8-foot crack along that section of pipe.
Leak detectors found four more leaks on a second visit to the city. Orndorf said fixes include replacing several fire hydrants.
Shellmar Park has a new swing set. Basketball goals and grills will be installed this week, leaving the installation of picnic tables at the pavilion.
The next goose hunt at Aerial-Foundation Park will be Nov. 12 and 17, with a mandatory orientation on Nov. 12 at the CA&C Depot. Applications can be submitted at 1700 Old Delaware Road.
