Roundup: Northridge edges Utica in Harrier Showdown

The Utica and Northridge boys cross country teams battled it out at the top. Both teams had three runner finish in the top six. But the Vikings (63 points) had three of the top four runners to edge Utica (64) in the 11-team small-school Harrier Showdown on Oct. 10 in Johnstown.

Northridge’s Nicholas Houck ran a time of 17:34.31 to beat out Utica’s Jay Figgins (17:45.29) for first place in the race, which had 93 total runners.

Elijah Carpenter (18:01.86) finished third and Braden Yutzy (18:02.75) was fourth for the Vikings.

Silas Bruckenberger (18:19.08) finished fifth and Brayden Ricketts (18:28.23) was sixth to lead Utica.

Hunter Keller (18:45.27) finished in ninth place and Samuel Whitney (19:16.29) was 11th to lead East Knox (121), which finished sixth as a team.

Taylor Severt led the Bulldog girls team with a time of 21:31.3 to finish third out of 54 runners in the small-school meet.

Lillian Thomas (10th, 22:34.26), Haleigh Landis (13th, 23:53.7) and Alexandria Magers (16th, 23:58.55) were also solid for East Knox (61), which finished second behind Northridge (52) in the five-team meet. Johnstown’s Reese Savage won with a time of 19:35.53.

Olyvia Ashbrook (second, 21:02.97), Albree Ashbrook (fourth, 21:31.42) and Anabeth Hilton (eighth, 22:21.26) led the Vikings.

Laura Brubaker (12th, 23:03.7), Riley Waggoner (22nd, 24.16.57) and Delaney Kerstetter (23rd, 24:40.0) led Utica (105), which finished fifth.

Harding Invitational

Sophomore Sophie Zoldak turned in another solid effort with a fifth-place finish out of 106 total runners at the Harding Invitational on Oct. 10 in Marion.

Zoldak ran a time of 19:51.8 helped the Yellow Jackets (218 points) finish eighth in the 13-team Forest race behind winner Lexington (27), which was led by Halle Hamilton (18:46.5), who won the race.

Hannah Hofferberth (49th, 22:51.7), Alex Crouch (56th, 23:12.9), Emma Rinehart (63rd, 24:05.3) and Marissa Rutter (67th, 24:32.2) also scored for Mount Vernon.

The boys team finished 13th out of 15 teams in the Forest race with a score of 361 points. New Albany (38) took first place, led by Victor Orsinelli (16:13.6), who beat out 137 runners to win top honors.

Logan Eggert (44th, 18:04.0), Jordan Treber (66th, 18:35.6), Jonathan Rutter (93rd, 19:15.7), Logan Moore (102nd, 19:41.0) and Jonathan Hamman (110th, 20:04.2) scored for the Jackets.

Highland quad

Thomas Caputo’s streak of first-place finishes came to an end on Oct. 10 at an impromptu quad at Highland.

Mason White of Cardington ran a time of 16:14.8 to edge Caputo (16:32.1) and 53 other runners from Cardington, Fredericktown, Highland and Centerburg.

Caputo won his previous eight races this season.

No team scores were tallied. The quad was held after the four teams pulled out of the Harding Invitational after Marion County was upgraded to a Level 3 ‘Red’ county because of an increase in coronavirus cases.

Highland’s Hunter Bolton (17:03.8) finished third and Joel Roberts (17:12.5) was fourth.

Titus Krabill (17:23.43) finished fifth and Evan France (17:29.55) sixth for Fredericktown.

Centerburg’s Blake Johnson (17:54.9) and Alex Hayden (18:08.4) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

Cardington also took top honors in the girls race, thanks to Louie Hallabrin, who ran 19:46.5 to beat out 28 other runners.

Camberly Schade (20:40.8) and Mia White (21:18.5) finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Scots.

Macy Thorne (21:48.8) finished fifth to lead the Freddies and Avery Tucker (ninth, 22:15.2) and Abigail Dickhof (10th, 22:15.6) led the Trojans.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Mount Vernon battled with host New Albany for three sets. But three set were all the Yellow Jackets needed in a 25-23, 25-23, 28-26 win over the Eagles in non-league play on Oct. 10 in New Albany.

Emma Summerfield had 18 digs and 12 kills and Maddie Sensel dished out 28 assists and added 15 digs and seven kills to lead Mount Vernon.

Brooke Radermacher, Maddy Burdette and Lexi Shaffer each turned in strong defensive performances Radermacher had 18 digs, Burdette had 16 and Shaffer blocked three shots for the Yellow Jackets (12-6), who have reeled off five straight wins.

Fredericktown def. Crestline 25-12, 25-12, 25-8

Lindsey Boeshart and Lainey Partington led the host Freddies, who served up 15 aces as a team in a straight-set victory over Crestline in non-league play on Oct. 10.

Boeshart served up six aces and Partington added five to lead Fredericktown. The duo also led with seven digs apiece.

Audrey Bouton had 16 kills and Katie Mull had 17 assists for the Freddies (8-8).

GIRLS SOCCER

Stella Bainbridge scored twice and Sidney Lyons had a goal and assisted on two others to lead Mount Vernon to a 4-1 win over Licking Valley in non-league play on Oct. 12 in Newark.

Olivia Reddy rounded out the scoring, McKenna Brokaw tallied two assists and Maddie Henricksen had four saves in goal for the Yellow Jackets (6-7-1).

Reagan Campbell tallied the only goal for the Panthers (5-5-1).
