Girls volleyball roundup: Burdette helps Jackets beat Rams in five-set thriller

Maddy Burdette turned in a stout defensive performance with 27 digs to lead the Mount Vernon girls volleyball team outlast Mansfield Madison in five-set thriller in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Oct. 8.

Burdette’s effort helped the host Yellow Jackets defeat the Rams 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 15-8.

Emma Summerfield had 18 kills, Maddie Sinsel had 38 assists and Kennedee Plank had six blocks for Mount Vernon, which won its fourth consecutive game.

The Rams fell to 6-12 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Mount Vernon def. Newark 25-15, 25-23, 25-21

Summerfield and Brooke Radermacher each turned in big performances to lead the Mount Vernon to a three-set victory over visiting Newark in non-league play on Oct. 7.

Summerfield had 13 kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks and Radermacher turned in 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks to lead the Yellow Jackets.

Maddie Sinsel dished out 27 assists, Maddy Burdette had 13 digs and Kennedee Plank had four blocks to lead Mount Vernon, which won its third consecutive game.

Highland def. Centerburg 25-15, 25-2, 25-10

Highland rolled to a straight-set win over Centerburg to clinch a share of the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference championship. It’s the eighth consecutive league title for the Scots going back to when they were in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.

Kendall Stover had 13 kills and three aces, Zoya Winkelfoos had 16 assists and Brylinn Tuggle had 10 digs to lead the Scots (18-1, 12-0).

Grace Wolford had nine assists, Amani Marshall had five kills and Gwyn Sands had four kills to lead the Trojans (7-10, 5-7).

Utica def. Heath 25-11, 27-25, 25-21

Utica served up 13 aces as a team to lead Utica to a straight-set win over host Heath in Licking County League play on Oct. 8.

Bella Ellis and Laini Crawmer had four aces apiece and Sydnie Tiebout added three to lead Utica (3-15, 3-10).

Lily Borem had nine kills and three blocks, Tiebout and Georgia Gamble had eight digs apiece and Ellis dished out 15 assists for Utica.

Centerburg def. East Knox 25-20, 25-15, 25-14

Wolford dished out 20 assists and added 11 digs to lead Centerburg to a straight-set win over East Knox in KMAC play on Oct. 6 in Howard.

Autumn Kennedy had 10 kills, Savannah Dehart had 17 digs and Stella Weisbrod served up four aces to lead the Trojans.

Shanda Melick, Ellie Hagy and Anjel Montgomery had five kills apiece; Madi Annett had 12 digs, Sydney Biggs had three aces to lead the Bulldogs.

Fredericktown def. Danville 23-25, 23-25, 28-26, 25-19, 15-6

Fredericktown rallied from two sets down, outlasting Danville in a thriller of a third set to win in five in KMAC play on Oct. 6 in Fredericktown.

Lindsey Boeshart had 26 kills, 17 digs and seven aces to lead the Freddies.

Katie Mull had 22 assists and Julia Partington dished out 18 and Audrey Bouton added three blocks for Fredericktown.

Highland def. Mount Gilead 25-5, 25-5, 25-16

Kendall Stover, Zoya Winkelfoos and Abby Eusey each served up four aces for Highland, which served up 18 as a team in a straight-set win over Mount Gilead in KMAC play on Oct. 6 in Sparta.

Winkelfoos had a team-high 17 assists and Stover led with six kills and seven digs for the Scots.

Licking Heights def. Utica 25-12, 25-7, 20-25, 25-17

Riley Mann had 14 digs and 10 kills to lead the host Hornets to a four-set victory over Utica in Licking County League play on Oct. 6 in Pataskala.

Paige Moreo had seven aces and Abigail Lewis served up five to lead the Hornets (4-13, 3-9), who had 19 as a team.

Bella Ellis had 11 assists, Crawmer had seven kills, Emilee Ellis had nine digs to lead Utica.

Lewis had 23 assists, Samantha Coe had 17 digs and Valencia Wilder had 10 kills for Heights.
