Pollard’s two homers lead Yellow Jackets to big win

Hard hits, Big win. Yellow Jackets buzz through Utica | Mount Vernon High School Softball

Keely Pollard led the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets to an 18-4 victory over the Utica Lady Redskins on Wednesday, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs.

According to the game report, Pollard's performance was pivotal during a 12-run third inning that secured the win. She hit both home runs to center field, each bringing in three runs. Initially, Mount Vernon trailed after Utica’s Kenzie Fletcher scored with an RBI double in the first inning. However, the Yellow Jackets quickly responded by scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning. Presli Pope contributed significantly with a two-run single that gave Mount Vernon a lead they maintained throughout.

Hailey Rudrick added a solo home run to left field in the third inning. Other notable performances included Brooke Dovenbarger with an RBI single, Mea Joyner and Meredith Jones with run-scoring singles, and Grace Bates with a two-run double.

Pollard and Bates each collected three hits, while Dovenbarger and Rudrick also recorded multiple hits. The team totaled 15 hits and executed one double play during the game. Gabby Beck started as pitcher for Mount Vernon, allowing one run on four hits over three innings before Miranda Oswalt took over in relief. Cheyene Smith took the loss for Utica, giving up 17 runs — 10 earned — on 14 hits over 2 2/3 innings; she struck out one batter and walked two.

Emily Meyers stood out for the Lady Redskins with a perfect 3-for-3 at-bat performance. The Mount Vernon Varsity Yellow Jackets are scheduled to travel to Granville for their next game on Friday.
