‘Leaplings’ special day honored with sale, events

MOUNT VERNON — The day only comes once every four years and some stores are making it worth your while to go out Feb. 29. And if you so happen to celebrate your birthday on that day, they are giving you an extra gift as well.

SPI Spot of Mount Vernon is having a Leap Day Celebration event. Fonda Kendric, program manager at SPI, said the day will feature multiple events around the word leap. There will be everything from the science behind why we have a leap day, to a vertical leaping contest, and ‘The Turtle Lady’ bringing in special leaping amphibians. There will be free admission from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. with the event running from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a fun event,” Kendric said. “We’re hoping to have a lot of people come out and have a good time and take advantage of the free admission.”

Other events going on will include an indoor bounce house and NASA Solar System Ambassador will be at the SPI to talk about leaping on the moon. And for any ‘leaplings’ — someone born on Feb. 29 — there’s a chance to win a year’s membership to SPI.

“Thanks to a generous donation, we will be giving out three family annual memberships,” Kenderic said. The first three families through the doors who had a child born on Feb. 29, and proof, will be given the membership.

Gordmans, located in Knox Village Square, will be hosting a birthday party for all leaplings this year. The event will include everything from birthday hats, streamers, balloons, cupcakes and even a special gift for the leapling and their friends, provided that they bring in a valid ID. The store even wants to give the leaplings a shout out over the PA system.

“This is the first time Gordmans is hosting a Leap Year Birthday event,” Sydney Edens, media liaison for Gordmans, said. “But Gordmans loves to provide specials events to their guests to help put the fun back into shopping.”
