HOWARD — Screws found on a Monroe Township road do not appear to be related to previous incidents of nails deliberately scattered on roadways.
Knox County Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Sheffer said Monday that about 30 drywall screws were reported Friday in the roadway at the intersection of Monroe Mills Road and Floralwood Drive near Apple Valley by a Monroe Township worker. The screws were removed by a sheriff’s deputy, Sheffer said.
Sheffer said the incident does not appear to be related to other incidents around the county in 2017 and 2018 that resulted in multiple reports of tire punctures. In December 2018, nails and screws were found in the area of Gilchrist Road and Earnest Road. In at least two reports, tires suffered damage from sharp objects placed in the roads.
Those reports were preceded by others of a similar nature in March 2017, when multiple tire punctures were reported. At least 15 reports were filed of nails and other sharp objects left in the roadway, including a single incident in which more than 20 piles of nails were found on Danville-Amity Road. Other incidents were reported on roads in Monroe Township. In both 2017 and 2018, a single report of a large nail or screw was found embedded in the road, its end sheared off leaving a sharp point protruding above the roadway.
The occurrences in 2017 became so frequent that a deputy purchased a magnet for use in picking up the nails.
