The Knox County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has launched a series of county‑wide initiatives to mark America’s 250th anniversary, headlined by the unveiling of a new public art installation in downtown Mount Vernon.

The mural, titled “Common Thread,” now adorns the south wall of 135 South Main Street, across from the South Main Plaza Dog Fountain, and serves as a vibrant centerpiece for the celebration.

Mounted against the historic brick façade of the Freedom Center’s downtown office, the mural was designed in a contemporary barn‑quilt style to symbolize Knox County’s interconnected heritage.

“Each block of the mural weaves together a different piece of our local story,” artist Natalie Roth said. “We wanted this piece to honor our heritage and the makers who shape our villages every day.”

The artwork also features a built‑in QR code, linking visitors to America250‑Ohio and Knox County events throughout the year.

Afet Kilinc, Executive Director of the Freedom Center, praised the project’s impact.

“This exciting initiative and beautiful design just add to the vibrancy of downtown,” he said.

Olivia Toth, Executive Director of the CVB, emphasized the broader vision.

“America’s 250th anniversary is about more than national history—it is about celebrating the unique communities and traditions that make Knox County so special,” Toth stated.

Complementing the mural, the CVB is advancing the Knox Voices project in partnership with the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County. This storytelling initiative invites residents to share personal narratives, family histories, and community memories, ensuring local voices are preserved as part of Ohio’s contribution to the semi‑quincentennial. Submissions will remain open through 2027, creating a digital time capsule for generations to come.

The celebration also extends across the county through an America250‑Ohio street banner program. Patriotic red, white, and blue banners now decorate Mount Vernon, Centerburg, and Fredericktown, uniting villages under the national milestone.

Festivities continue in July with Picnic at the Park at the CA&C Visitor Center and American Heritage Park. Held every Monday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the event invites families and visitors to enjoy food trucks, local eats, and riverside picnics along the Kokosing corridor.
