ODEW names Hillview Elementary a 2025 Overall 5‑Star School. | Newark City Schools

The Newark City Schools community is celebrating two major milestones that highlight excellence in both academics and service.

Hillview Elementary has earned statewide recognition for its performance, while Newark High School students demonstrated their commitment to the city through hands‑on volunteer work.

Hillview Elementary School, located at 1927 Horns Hill Road, was honored with the Overall 5‑Star Award from the Ohio Department of Education & Workforce for 2025, a distinction that reflects the highest level of achievement across multiple measures of school performance. This award recognizes not only student success but also the dedication of teachers, staff, and families who work together to create a thriving learning environment. Hillview recently received a banner and special recognition from ODEW to mark the accomplishment, a visible reminder of the school’s commitment to excellence. The honor underscores the hard work and collaboration that define Hillview’s culture, positioning the school as a model of achievement within Newark City Schools and across Ohio.

Meanwhile, Newark High School, located at 314 Granville Street, took its energy outside the classroom to make a difference in the community. On May 8, more than 130 students participated in the annual NHS Community Clean Up Day, spreading mulch and picking up trash at parks across Newark. The event drew wide participation from across the student body, including members of the football, flag football, and basketball teams, Key Club, Jr. ROTC, band, the Alternative Academy, and the National Honor Society. Together, they demonstrated the power of collective action, showing how student leadership and teamwork can directly benefit the city they call home. The cleanup day not only beautified public spaces but also reinforced the importance of civic responsibility and pride in Newark.

These achievements illustrate Newark City Schools’ dual focus on academic success and community impact. Hillview’s 5‑Star Award highlights the district’s commitment to high standards in education, while Newark High School’s cleanup day illustrates how students are encouraged to give back and lead by example. Both achievements showcase the values at the heart of the district—hard work, collaboration, and service—and serve as reminders that success is measured not only in grades and awards but also in the impact students make on their community.
