Ariel Corporation is marking a major milestone in 2026, its 60th anniversary.
Officially established on April 27, 1966, the company’s origins trace back to founder Jim Buchwald’s decision to design a compressor prototype. When it came time to name the venture, Buchwald drew inspiration from his beloved 1948 Ariel Square Four motorcycle, admired for its twin-crankshaft design and smooth performance. That choice set the tone for a company defined by engineering precision and innovation.
The anniversary celebration is more than a recognition of decades in manufacturing. It is a tribute to the people, leadership, and vision that elevated Ariel into a global standard in natural gas compression. From its earliest prototypes to its modern expansion, Ariel’s story has remained deeply tied to the Buchwald family and their commitment to excellence.
Karen Buchwald Wright joined the company in 1980 and became a transformative leader. Over two decades, she guided Ariel through remarkable growth and modernization. Operations expanded across Knox, Licking, and Summit counties, while nearly 45,000 compressors were shipped to customers in more than 100 countries. Her leadership strengthened ISO quality standards, championed technical education, and advanced manufacturing advocacy at both state and national levels—ensuring Ariel’s competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global industry.
The celebration also honors Jim Buchwald, whose pioneering work in high-speed natural gas compressors laid the foundation for Ariel’s success. From the first prototype to unit #13,000, his hands-on approach and engineering mindset shaped the company’s identity. During his 33-year tenure, he instilled a culture centered on quality, customer focus, and mentorship—values that continue to define Ariel today. In recognition of their lasting impact, both Jim Buchwald and Karen Buchwald Wright were inducted into the Ohio Oil and Gas Association Hall of Fame in 2022.
Looking forward, Ariel emphasizes that the future of compression depends on people. That commitment was reinforced in 2017 with the opening of a world-class training center at its Mount Vernon headquarters. Featuring 12 modern classrooms and three hands-on labs, the facility supports the next generation of engineers, technicians, and operators. Staffed by experienced professionals, it embodies Ariel’s dedication to education, innovation, and long-term industry leadership.
As Ariel celebrates 60 years, it stands as a testament to vision, craftsmanship, and the enduring power of investing in people.
