On May 7, 2026, Heritage Ohio and the City of Newark will hold a one-day Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) preservation training for local review boards, commissions, and city staff at NEWORK Space in downtown Newark.
The event is designed for members of historic preservation commissions, design review boards, planning commissions, and municipal staff who make decisions about preservation in their communities. The workshop aims to provide practical tools and guidance on topics such as design review, preservation law, meeting procedures, enforcement strategies, and applying national standards to local projects. According to Heritage Ohio, the session is particularly relevant for both new commissioners and community members unfamiliar with historic preservation.
CAMP will be presented by subject experts from the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC), which offers technical support and manages an information network for local commissions. The program includes sessions led by Kate Singleton on the importance of preservation and meeting procedures; Sharon Bradley on legal basics and enforcement; and Chris Wand on design review standards. Participants will also engage in interactive exercises to practice decision-making using real-world scenarios.
The workshop is supported by Certified Local Government grant funds through the Ohio History Connection. Registration costs $50 per person and includes morning refreshments, a catered lunch, and printed materials. Preregistration is required due to limited space.
Additional information about registration can be found at the Heritage Ohio website. CAMP will run from 9:00 a.m. until 4:45 p.m., offering attendees opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in the field of historic preservation.
