Four members of the East Knox FFA of East Knox Local Schools recently competed in the State FFA Food Science Career Development Event at The Ohio State University's Parker Food Science building, finishing 18th among teams from across Ohio.

The event matters as it provides students with experience in food science and technology, testing their knowledge and practical skills. Team members Bryar Wilson, Mackenzie Wilson, Wyatt Baker, and Hayden Garman represented East Knox FFA in the competition.

According to East Knox Local Schools, participants completed an online test on basic principles of food science and technology, responded to customer problems, identified food safety and sanitation issues by finding violations to good manufacturing practices, recognized equipment used in food processing, solved nutrition math problems, and performed sensory evaluations through taste tests and aroma identifications. They also worked together on a team activity developing a food product with a nutrition label and illustrations.

To qualify for the state contest, the team placed second in the District 7 contest held earlier at Centerburg High School in Knox County. The top four individuals from that event made up the team score. In individual results at District 7, Mackenzie Wilson placed fifth, Hayden Garman was sixth, while Bryar Wilson and Wyatt Baker tied for tenth place.

This marks the eighth year that East Knox FFA has participated in the state Food Science Career Development Event. More information can be found at East Knox Local Schools.
