Mount Vernon Nazarene University's men's basketball team achieved a significant victory over top-ranked Grace College in a recent game held at Ariel Arena. The Cougars, who are part of the Crossroads League and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, managed to secure a 79-66 win against Grace College, which was leading the national rankings in the NAIA.
The game began with MVNU taking an early lead of 7-0. However, Grace responded with a 14-2 run, eventually leading 21-16. The Cougars fought back with a 9-0 run and ended the first half ahead at 40-36 after Trent Koning hit a three-pointer at the buzzer. Despite several attempts by Grace to close the gap in the second half, MVNU maintained control and extended their lead to 68-61 with another three-pointer from Koning.
Isaiah Brown led all scorers with 20 points off the bench, while Koning contributed 14 points and seven assists. Peyton Heiss added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Reed Platfoot had 11 points along with six rebounds. Coach Ronai expressed pride in his team's defensive efforts and execution on both ends of the floor.
MVNU's defense was particularly effective, holding Grace to just 32.8% shooting from the field. The Cougars themselves shot 43.8% overall and made eight out of twenty-two three-point attempts.
The university is known for its emphasis on community service and global outreach through its programs, drawing from Wesleyan evangelical traditions to foster cultural development. It also features facilities like the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium.
Mount Vernon Nazarene University will next face Indiana Wesleyan University on February 11 in Marion, Indiana.
