Four members of the East Knox FFA recently participated in the State FFA Agricultural Biotechnology Career Development Event, securing seventeenth place among various teams from Ohio. The event took place at the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Team members Ava Page, Ariel Atkinson, Jasmine Smith, and Mackenzie Wilson were involved in a series of challenges that tested their knowledge and skills in biotechnology.

Participants began with an online exam featuring 50 multiple-choice questions on biotechnology to qualify for the state finals. In the finals, they engaged in individual activities such as identifying equipment and supplies through specimens or photographs, using a micropipette, analyzing gel results, weighing materials with an electronic balance, labeling solutions correctly, making solutions, interpreting gram stains, and reading safety data sheets for chemicals.

Additionally, teams completed a group activity involving research and presentation. This year's task was centered on soybean diseases. Teams had 60 minutes to prepare a five-minute presentation followed by judges' questions.

The event aims to encourage FFA members to explore the diverse field of biotechnology. It emphasizes basic knowledge and skills applicable to industries like animal science, plant science, food production, and biotechnology itself. Participants are expected to identify industry materials and tools while demonstrating scientific understanding through exams and practical evaluations.

East Knox FFA's participation highlights their commitment to fostering skills in agricultural biotechnology among students.
