Mount Vernon City Schools has announced that all schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 28, due to severe winter weather conditions. The district cited extremely cold temperatures and significant snowfall as the primary reasons for the closure.
In a message to families, Superintendent Bill Seder stated, "Due to current conditions, Mount Vernon City Schools will be Closed on Wednesday, January 28. Wednesday will be treated as a Remote Learning Day for students and Staff."
According to the district, nearly 14 inches of snow have fallen in the area. While local and state crews are working to clear main roadways, many rural roads and secondary city streets remain difficult for school buses and student drivers. The district also noted that sidewalks used by students who walk to school are still largely unmaintained, raising safety concerns.
Elementary students will receive learning packets when they return to school. They will have ample time to complete these assignments. Secondary students are expected to find their assignments posted in Google Classroom by 10:00 a.m., with work due within two school days after returning.
Superintendent Seder thanked families for their patience and said updates would continue as conditions improve. "We remain hopeful for a safe return to in-person learning for our students soon and will continue to keep families informed," he said.
Families are encouraged to monitor email, the district website, and other communication channels for further updates.
