Food for the Hungry in Mount Vernon has announced Captain Christine Moretz as the recipient of the Zelkowitz Memorial Award for Community Service. The award, sponsored by Mount Vernon Nazarene University, honors individuals whose dedication and leadership embody a spirit of service and compassion. This annual award is given during the Food for the Hungry Broadcast to a Knox County citizen who exemplifies community service, particularly in relation to Food for the Hungry.
Captain Moretz, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army Mount Vernon Corps, has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to the community. Her upbringing as a "Salvation Army officer’s kid" took her family across various locations, fostering her passion for service. Before joining full-time ministry, she worked in early childhood education while raising her two children. In 2011, she answered a call to Officership and was commissioned as an Ordained Officer in 2013.
Jeffery Scott from Knox County Foundation praised Captain Moretz's work addressing food insecurity and providing assistance to those in need. Jen Odenweller from The Ariel Foundation commended her dedication to community challenges. Knox County Commissioner Bill Pursel highlighted her efforts in affordable childcare and food security. Mayor Matt Starr expressed admiration for her steady devotion to vulnerable neighbors.
Zach Shoro from The Salvation Army of Mount Vernon shared anecdotes about Captain Moretz's engaging approach with people seeking assistance. Her children also congratulated her on receiving the award. FFTH President Austin Swallow and MVNU President Carson Castlemen praised Captain Moretz during the presentation ceremony.
