Four students from Danville Local Schools will represent their district in the upcoming Knox County Spelling Bee next month. The students—Camren Clark (fifth grade), Glen Geog (sixth grade), Kellyn Addair (seventh grade), and Charlotte Meyers (eighth grade)—earned their spots by winning recent in-school, grade-level competitions.
Clark secured the fifth-grade title by correctly spelling “cosmetics” and “mascot” in the sixth round. Cora Jensen was named runner-up among ten participants. Geog won the sixth-grade bee after spelling “incredible” and “peppercorn” in the ninth round, with Trinity George-Langwasser finishing second out of ten spellers.
In seventh grade, Addair claimed victory by spelling “deferential” during the 17th round. Isabelle Payne was runner-up among nine competitors. Meyers took first place for eighth grade by spelling “courier” and “Frankenstein,” concluding the competition in the 11th round. Kaley Smith finished as runner-up out of ten participants.
These four champions will move on to compete against other winners from Centerburg, East Knox, Fredericktown, and Mount Vernon at the county bee scheduled for January 14 at 7 p.m., which will be held at Mount Vernon High School auditorium. The Knox County Commissioners are set to serve as judges once again.
The event is organized by the Knox County Educational Service Center and receives financial support from the Mount Vernon Rotary Club. Taylor Gingery, gifted and talented coordinator at the Educational Service Center, helps arrange each district’s in-school bees and will act as pronouncer during the county competition.
