Hundreds of elementary students will fill the Knox Memorial Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 8, for the annual “YES! Concert for Grade Schoolers,” a program coordinated by the Knox Educational Service Center to introduce children in grades 1 through 6 to the experience of live performance.

This year’s event will feature singer-songwriter Sarah Goslee Reed, accompanied by Tom Martin on bass and piano and Skip Trask on drums.

Organizers anticipate a strong turnout from first graders, as well as participation from older students.

"I will be joined by Tom Martin on bass and piano and by Skip Trask on drums," Reed said. "Not to mention all 700 or so First Graders! Our favorite gig of the year!"

This isn’t Reed’s first time performing for first graders—she took the stage for them last year as well. According to the Knox Educational Service Center, she understands the significance of the YES! concert, recognizing that for many children, it’s their first-ever encounter with live theater.

“I always hope the kids leave with a spark that creates a lifelong interest in music and live theater,” Reed stated.

Reed, who is also a former microbiologist, has long been active in the Ohio music scene, performing both for adults and for young audiences. Her folk-inspired songs often draw on themes of nature and community, and she has collaborated with schools and educational programs across the state.

Students from Twin Oak, Wiggin Street, and Pleasant Street Elementary schools will be part of the audience attending the YES! concert.
