The City of Mount Vernon has announced its Volunteers of the Year for 2025. The honorees, who will be recognized at the First Friday event on August 1, include Paul Acitelli (posthumously), Heather Barbour, and Nellie Six Productions' Jeff Williams and Courtney DeCosky.

Mayor Matthew Starr will present the awards, acknowledging their contributions to the community. "Our community is better, stronger and more connected because of these four amazing individuals who care deeply about Mount Vernon and want to give back," said Starr.

Paul Acitelli, who passed away on June 18 this year, was known for his dedication to helping those with disabilities. He supported families during Christmas through organizations like the Salvation Army and raised funds for housing assistance and recreational access.

Heather Barbour, a physical education teacher at Twin Oak and Columbia Elementary Schools, has introduced various sports programs in Mount Vernon. Her volunteer work includes efforts with Lifepoint Church and the City’s Recreation Board. She also plays a key role in teaching children bicycling skills through programs like All Kids Bike.

Jeff Williams and Courtney DeCosky have significantly influenced the local arts scene with their company, Nellie Six Productions. They transformed the Summer Front Porch Concert Series into a major cultural event in Mount Vernon. As part of the Kokosing Valley Arts Alliance, they have worked to support local artists.

The award ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. on South Main Street during First Friday festivities. Mayor Starr emphasized the importance of recognizing these volunteers: "Taking a moment to recognize these volunteers means a lot," he said. "They reflect who we are as a city on so many levels. Mount Vernon is a better place because of people like this."
