The City of Mount Vernon has initiated the expansion of Mound View Cemetery to address increasing demand and limited burial space. The project will add over 1,200 new grave sites across two newly designed sections. As of July 2025, only 240 full-sized grave sites remain available in Section T of the cemetery.
Planning for this expansion began in 2024. In May of that year, the city engaged Grever & Ward, Inc., a firm known for cemetery planning and design, to conduct site surveys and develop designs for two new sections: Section R and Section S. The design work started in August 2024, with final topographical maps and site plans delivered earlier this year.
Excavation work commenced this month with Beheler Excavating handling the initial phase. This includes terminating existing grass to prepare for grading and removing topsoil for later use during final grading. Once rough grading is complete, the site will be shaped according to design specifications, with permanent markers installed to guide future development.
The expansion will add a total of 1,256 burial sites: 502 in Section R and 754 in Section S. Mayor Matthew Starr commented on the project’s significance: "This expansion is an important investment for our community’s future generations. Mound View Cemetery is not only a final resting place but a space of peace, memory and history. By preparing these new sections, we’re ensuring that residents and families will continue to have access to a well-maintained, dignified cemetery as our City grows."
