Downtown Mount Vernon is about to get a vibrant new look, thanks to a public art initiative led by the Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) in partnership with Experience Mount Vernon. The organizations are launching a utility box art project designed to beautify city streets while paying tribute to Mount Vernon’s rich history and culture.
The first installation is scheduled for July 2 at the corner of North Main and Chestnut Street, where a utility box will be artistically wrapped. This will mark the beginning of a year-long effort to transform more than ten utility boxes throughout the downtown area into eye-catching works of art. Each piece will highlight a unique element of Mount Vernon's past.
"We are incredibly excited to bring this vision to life in downtown Mount Vernon," said Olivia Toth, Marketing Manager for the Knox County CVB. “This project not only enhances the aesthetic of our city but also ties in perfectly with the upcoming America 250-Ohio celebrations planned for 2026.”
Local artist Emily Morrison has been chosen to design the first round of artwork. Known for her deep ties to the community, Morrison has previously contributed her photography and artistic skills to numerous local events and nonprofits. “We’re excited to have Emily on this project because she has generously donated her talents to so many community efforts,” Toth added.
The initiative is a product of strong community collaboration. “Experience Mount Vernon is thrilled to partner with the CVB on a project that beautifies our downtown in such a creative way,” said Lacey Filkins, Director of Experience Mount Vernon.
Funding for the project is being provided by the Knox County CVB, Experience Mount Vernon, and a grant from the Ariel Foundation. Once completed, the utility box artworks will be featured as part of the CVB’s new interactive Mount Vernon Art & History Trail, which is currently under development.
According to Toth, the trail will offer residents and visitors a fresh way to experience the city’s stories, culture, and creativity, with a full launch expected ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
