The Lakes at Ariel-Foundation Park is set to host Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 17, featuring a full day of outdoor activities for families.

"These are obviously all valuable and important goals for all the residents of Mount Vernon and Knox County," said Mayor Matthew Starr, according to a city news release. "But beyond that, Kids to Parks Day gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful recreational area with their family and friends during a beautiful time of the year."

According to the release, the event will commence with a Fish & Game Association Youth Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by another session from 1 to 4 p.m. Fishing poles and bait will be provided, although participants may bring their own equipment. Knox County Cub Scout packs and Scouting America troops will organize various scouting activities and games from 10 a.m. to noon, including inflatable archery and BB guns.

The news release states that Knox County Head Start will mark its 60th anniversary with celebrations during the event. Activities will include a petting zoo, bounce house, and other games from 1 to 4 p.m., with Starr delivering a proclamation in honor of Head Start.

The release mentions that PAK United will feature a tent showcasing a Mount Vernon Fire Department fire truck and the Police Department's therapy dog, Nova. The Exchange Club will provide hot dogs, while park tours will be available throughout the afternoon. Some activities are planned regardless of weather conditions.

According to the news release, the National Park Trust established Kids to Parks Day in 2000 with the aim of encouraging families and children to explore local parks, public lands, and waters, promoting an active lifestyle and fostering an appreciation for nature.
