Mount Vernon Nazarene University awarded honorary degrees to Bishop Edward T. Cook and Mark R. Ramser during its 65th Commencement ceremonies on May 3. Bishop Cook received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree for his service in the Church of God in Christ, while Ramser was honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Bishop Cook serves as the Jurisdictional Prelate of the Ohio North First Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ. He has been actively involved in leadership roles at various levels within the denomination. His accolades include the NAACP President’s Award and the NAACP Humanitarian Award, which he received in recognition of his dedication to serving others.
MVNU President Dr. Carson Castleman highlighted Bishop Cook's commitment to community engagement, stating, “Bishop Cook’s leadership journey began with a profound commitment to listening, traveling across cities and small towns to engage individuals of all ages, gathering insights on their needs.” Dr. Castleman praised Bishop Cook's ability to open new opportunities for ministry and his transformative impact on communities across Ohio.
Mark R. Ramser, President of the Ohio Cumberland Gas Co., was recognized for his contributions to both Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the broader community. Raised in Knox County, Ramser has been involved with numerous community organizations and has supported MVNU through board memberships.
Dr. Castleman acknowledged Ramser's influence on spiritual growth within the community: “An active member of the Mount Vernon Community, Mark has made significant contributions to Mount Vernon Nazarene University and the broader community." Dr. Castleman commended Ramser’s humility and genuine care for others, noting his selfless efforts that create an environment where individuals can thrive spiritually and personally.
Both honorees have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service, making significant impacts through their respective roles within religious and community settings.
