Mount Vernon's annual Spring Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday at a new location, the Schnormeier Events Center, and is open to all Knox County residents this year.
According to a press release, the event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 3, in front of the Schnormeier Events Center at Ariel~Foundation Park. A partnership with Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention has extended the city's clean-up initiative to include all Knox County residents. Proof of residency may be required.
The release states that anyone in Knox County with large, unwanted items, old furniture, or general junk can dispose of it responsibly this weekend to help keep local communities clean and clutter-free. Participants are required to unload their materials themselves, although volunteers will be available on site to assist.
The event imposes no limit on loads, according to the release. Each load will incur a cost of $20, with payment options including credit card, cash, or check. Checks should be made payable to "City of Mount Vernon" with "Spring Clean-Up" noted in the memo.
The release specifies that no trailer or dumping will be permitted; all materials must be disposed of by hand. Large furniture items like mattresses can be stacked behind dumpsters. Participants are advised to use their own protective equipment such as eye protection and gloves.
Materials not permitted for disposal include hazardous or toxic wastes, lead acid batteries, materials containing asbestos, infectious or bio-hazardous waste, oil or auto parts, steel drums or steel structures, ashes, dead animals, liquids, tires, yard waste, construction materials or appliances containing CFC (freon), such as air conditioners, freezers, humidifiers and refrigerators.
