The Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County is set to host two Ohio authors, Andrew Grace and Ric Sheffield, in the coming days. Poet Andrew Grace will present his new poetry collection, "A Brief History of the Midwest," during this fall's Poetry Potluck event. Grace will read from his work and lead a generative poetry workshop. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 25th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Brown Family Environmental Center in Gambier.
Andrew Grace has published three books of poems, with his work featured in prominent publications such as The New Yorker and Poetry magazine.
Ric S. Sheffield, an Emeritus professor at Kenyon College, will discuss his nonfiction book "False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio." This book explores stories of Black men fighting for voting rights in late-1800s Ohio and draws parallels to contemporary voter suppression tactics. Sheffield's program will take place on Tuesday, October 28th, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Veterans Hall in the Knox Memorial Building in Mount Vernon.
Library staffer Jamie Lyn Smith-Fletcher expressed enthusiasm about the events: "Andy Grace and Ric Sheffield are two local treasures, both of whom have national stature for their achievements as writers and scholars."
Complimentary copies of both authors' books will be available at the library on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Additional copies may also be available to event attendees under similar terms.
All events hosted by the library are free and open to the public. They are recommended for adults aged 18 and over; however, younger attendees can participate if accompanied by an adult guardian.
