As the Mount Vernon High School boys' tennis team prepares for the upcoming season, head coach Steve Tier is eager to see his players embrace new challenges.
Tier, who has been involved with tennis since he was 10 years old, said his passion for the sport stems from the opportunities it has provided him throughout his life. Now, he hopes to offer similar positive experiences to his players. "I want to offer young tennis players the same opportunities I had to let tennis impact their lives positively," Tier said.
According to Tier, with a mix of experienced players and rising talent, he is optimistic about what lies ahead. Senior Andrew Conway, who has played singles for the past two years, is in contention for the team's No. 1 singles spot. However, he will face strong competition from senior Austin Anderson, who is transitioning from doubles to singles play. "The rest of the spots on the team are wide open," Tier said. "Veteran players like Christopher Hawthorne and Griffin Beach are looking to improve their playing positions on varsity, while freshman Mason Tocheff is trying to make an impact on the team quickly."
Tier expressed particular excitement about seeing his players achieve their long-term goals and take on more significant roles within the team. "I think that we will see some improvements in the results that the varsity singles players will provide the team," he said.
With a competitive roster and a determined mindset, the Mount Vernon High School boys' tennis team appears poised for a season of growth and success under Tier's leadership.
