Six wrestlers from Mount Vernon High School have qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament, scheduled to take place at the Jerome Schottenstein Center from March 7-9. Coach Firebaugh expressed satisfaction with the team's performance at the district tournament.
"The district tournament is always highly competitive, featuring some of Central Ohio's best wrestlers. I feel we had our guys well-prepared and wrestling at their best for this tournament," said Firebaugh. "We took eight wrestlers, and while our goal was to qualify all eight for the state tournament, sending five is a great accomplishment."
In addition to those who qualified, two other wrestlers placed sixth, resulting in seven out of eight team members placing in the competition. This strong showing secured Mount Vernon a fourth-place finish in the Central District team standings.
"Not only did we qualify five wrestlers for state, but all five placed in the top two, including two district champions," added Firebaugh. "Their high placements will also benefit them in seeding for the state tournament."
Among those heading to state is Ash Brokaw from the Mount Vernon Girls Wrestling Team, who won her second district championship in the 105-pound weight class.
"Now, we just have to make sure they are all peaking and wrestling their best this weekend at the Schott!" concluded Firebaugh.
The individual performances include Caleb Snyder as a district runner-up at 106 pounds; Maverik Gregory as a runner-up at 157 pounds; Jake Taylor as a runner-up at 165 pounds; Luke Mullins as a champion at 190 pounds; Alex Taylor as a champion at 285 pounds; and Ash Brokaw as a champion in her weight class.
Mount Vernon's wrestling team scored 138.5 points overall in the Central District Boys Wrestling Team Scores ranking fourth behind Dublin Coffman (240 points), Olentangy Liberty (173.5 points), and Marysville (153 points).
