Mount Vernon Councilman Mike Miller has announced his resignation from the city council, citing health and family reasons. His tenure will conclude following the March 10 city council meeting.
"Unfortunately after 8 weeks of thinking and reflection, I will be resigning my position on city council. This is for health and family reasons, I will still be involved in the community as I have been since moving here 31 years ago," Miller said in a Facebook post on February 28.
According to the Facebook post, Miller expressed his affection for Mount Vernon and optimism about its future. He extended gratitude to the city's residents for allowing him to serve on the council.
Former City Council member Samantha Scoles was among those who acknowledged Miller's contributions. She remarked that he provided a voice of reason and experience that challenged the city administration, hoping he set an example for his successor.
Miller ran for the Fourth Ward council seat when former Council member Mike Hillier chose not to seek reelection in 2023, according to a previous Mount Vernon News article. He began his term alongside John Ruckman on January 1, 2024. Ruckman took over the 2nd Ward seat after former Council member John Francis also opted not to run again.
The article further noted that Miller retired after more than three decades with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and had been working part-time as a teacher's aide. He has been affiliated with several local organizations including the Exchange Club of Mount Vernon, Sons of AMVets, and the Fraternal Order of Police for over 30 years.
