Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr joined the community in mourning the death of philanthropist and community leader Karen Buchwalk Wright on October 16, as he honored her legacy.
"Whether through her volunteer work, her advocacy, or the countless quiet acts of kindness she offered without expectation of recognition, Karen lived a life rooted in service and love. She believed in the power of community and especially in lifting others up, in lending a hand, in making Mount Vernon a place where everyone felt seen and supported," Starr said in a Facebook post.
According to a report by Mount Vernon News, Wright led Ariel Corporation for decades as its president, CEO, and later chair. She passed away on October 15 after a prolonged battle with cancer. The fourth-generation Mount Vernon resident transformed her family's company and her hometown, expanding Ariel's global reach while maintaining the company's reputation.
Starr noted that Wright was more than a beloved friend, neighbor, and family member; she continues to be a cornerstone of Mount Vernon. The legacy she left behind will inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
Starr also said that Wright's legacy is interwoven into the fabric of the city. Her presence is felt in local schools, places of worship, the arts, community programs, downtown areas, and businesses. She demonstrated what it means to lead with compassion and give selflessly even without an audience.
In his post, Starr asked that when Wright is remembered, her spirit should be carried forward by those whom she touched. He urged the community to do this with kindness in their actions, humility in their hearts, and a continued commitment to the community she loved so deeply. "Rest in peace, dear Karen. Your light will never fade," he said.
