The Mount Vernon City Council, Knox County Commission, and Regional Planning Commission are set to hold a joint meeting on Monday, February 17, to discuss the draft comprehensive plan prepared by the Together Knox Leadership Group. This public meeting will provide residents an opportunity to learn about the plan and offer feedback.

The special joint meeting will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Station Break, located at 160 Howard Street in Mount Vernon.

The Together Knox comprehensive plan is a long-term policy document designed to guide the future development of Knox County. According to the meeting notice, the plan reflects ideas and input from residents while addressing development, conservation, public services, and amenities. It will serve as an update to the 2018 plan, combining extensive community engagement with rigorous technical analysis. One chapter of the plan focuses specifically on the City of Mount Vernon.

Community participation remains central to the plan's development. Feedback collected during this joint meeting will help finalize the document, ensuring it aligns with the needs and aspirations of Knox County residents. More information about the plan, including opportunities to provide input, is available at TogetherKnox.org.

A report from Mount Vernon News explains that the 2025 Knox County Comprehensive Plan aims to balance growth and development with economic vitality, housing for future generations, and the preservation of the county’s agricultural heritage and natural landscapes. The approval process for the plan is already underway, with a final vote expected in March.

The plan requires approval by the Regional Planning Commission, City of Mount Vernon, and Knox County Commission. While township approval is not required, many townships represented on the Regional Planning Commission may choose to endorse the plan after its adoption.

This comprehensive effort seeks to create a sustainable vision for Knox County, with collaboration and input from residents at its core.
