After a tough loss to Fredericktown earlier in the week, Centerburg bounced back in a big way, defeating Northmor 65-26 on Jan. 8. The win, which improved the Lady Trojans’ record to 11-1, was highlighted by a dominant defensive performance and an offensive explosion from Kayla Larimore.
Larimore, who has been the team’s standout all season, poured in 32 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Despite Northmor’s attempts to double-team her, the senior forward consistently found ways to score, whether finishing through contact or stepping outside to hit shots.
“Kayla brings it every game,” Centerburg head coach Bill Abner said. “Teams try to get her off her spot, but she’s just such a good player. She finishes through contact, and she can step out and shoot it. She was huge for us tonight.”
The Lady Trojans got off to a sluggish start, holding a slim 2-1 lead after the first few minutes. With the offense struggling to find its rhythm, Coach emphasized the need for better focus and energy. After a timeout, the team responded with improved intensity, playing more like the squad that started the season 10-0.
“I told the girls it was time to move on from the Fredericktown game and focus on this one,” Abner said. “We wanted to get back to playing the way we had been earlier this season, with energy and intensity. I was really happy with the way they responded.”
Evie Stowe, often the team’s unselfish point guard, played a key role in the first half. She didn’t look to score much, but instead helped facilitate the offense with 7 assists and 6 steals, all while adding 8 points. Stowe’s all-around performance was critical in setting the tone early, and her court vision helped the team get into an offensive groove.
“Evie is such a talented kid, and tonight she was super aggressive,” Coach Abner said. “When she plays like that, we’re a very tough team to beat.”
The Lady Trojans’ defense was suffocating throughout the game, especially in the second half. They forced 25 turnovers and held Northmor scoreless for nearly 11 minutes during one stretch in the second half.
“We pride ourselves on defense, and tonight we played great,” Abner added. “When you can hold a team scoreless for that long, you give yourself a great chance to win.”
Tiara Sheppard also contributed with 15 points and 5 steals, further solidifying the team’s defensive efforts and transition game. As a result, Centerburg was able to pull away and secure the comfortable victory.
The win sets the stage for the Lady Trojans as they look to continue their strong season and build momentum heading into the second half of the campaign.
