David Allen Spitzer, age 87, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on November
27, 2024. Born on August 25, 1937, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, David lived a full
and vibrant life, touching the hearts of many.
David graduated from Mt. Vernon High School and proudly served four
years in the U.S. Navy and was a proud member of the American Legion
for over 40 years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Franklin
University. David’s career spanned aluminum manufacturing, where he
worked as a foreman for companies like Kaiser, Consolidated, and Alumax.
Later, he transitioned to the hospitality industry as a Regional
Maintenance Engineer for Tharaldson Hospitality Management, a role he
cherished.
David was a man of simple pleasures. He loved root beer barrels, Ruffles
potato chips, and Snyder’s sourdough pretzels, often carrying these treats
in his coat pockets. His morning coffee, bread and butter with grape jelly
at every meal, and his personal saltshaker were daily staples. He enjoyed
feeding peanuts to the Blue Jays from his deck and watching them from
his window.
An avid golfer, David once defeated a young Jack Nicklaus in a school golf
match, a memory he cherished. He was deeply involved in his children’s
lives, coaching their sports teams and volunteering as an umpire. A skilled
carpenter, David built homes, playhouses, and dollhouses, leaving a
legacy of craftsmanship. David’s love for his family was evident in
everything he did. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51
years, Beverly (Houck) Spitzer, and his son, Christopher Spitzer, his father
Clyde Spitzer and mother Lorienna (Mitchell) Spitzer and eight half-
brothers and one half-sister. He is survived by his son Bradley Spitzer,
daughter Candace Knight, daughter-in-law Alcy Spitzer, son-in-law Kevin
Knight, daughter-in-law Jessica Spitzer, granddaughters Brandy Spitzer,
Mackenzie Bogard, Addison Knight, Isabella Spitzer, and great
granddaughter Mira Spitzer. The family will honor his wishes and place
root beer barrels, a Pepsi, and a pack of cigarettes in his casket.
