A public hearing will be held to gather public comments on a proposal to update the city's Planning and Zoning Code. The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. on July 22 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The proposal includes a revised official Zoning Map.

According to a City of Mount Vernon public notice, consultant Wendy Moeller of Compass Point Planning was hired after an introduction by the Knox County Area Development Foundation to update the code. The code was audited, public hearings were held, and themes were established for improvement.

The city of Mount Vernon Planning and Zoning Code Public Hearing Draft and Proposed Zoning Map were published in May 2024 after months of review, according to the same public notice. The proposal was presented to the public on May 9, with written public comments sent via email and an online form.

After a public hearing on June 6, the Municipal Planning Commission voted 5-0 to recommend council approval of the proposed zoning amendment for Part 11 of the Planning and Zoning Code, including a proposed revised official Zoning Map. Materials from this proposal are available for public inspection with the Clerk of Council at 40 Public Square, Mount Vernon.
