Mount Vernon City Council approved an amendment to its Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) Signage ordinance to avoid a reversion to the previous language of the legislation. The ordinance was adopted during its May 28 meeting.

According to Councilmember James Mahan and Law Director Rob Broeren, the legislation needed to be adopted by May 31 or it would revert. On Mahan's motion, the council voted to suspend the rule requiring three separate readings of the resolution so the deadline could be met for the DORA amendment.

New DORA signage can be installed before the expiration of the prior resolution under the terms of the version adopted by the council, according to Mount Vernon City Council's May 28 draft meeting minutes.

The aluminum signs will be the size of a standard parking sign or smaller, according to an exhibit in Mount Vernon City Council's May 28 draft meeting minutes. The signs will state, "Mount Vernon DORA. No Beverages Beyond This Point." Mount Vernon Nazarene University is installing three-foot fences at the South Main Plaza Fountain, and DORA signs will be erected there to keep downtown visitors from taking their DORA cups with beverages onto the plaza.
